How to delete all emails at once in Mail app on iPhone and iPad

One of the most useful apps for the iPhone or iPad is the Mail app. You can read and handle all of your emails in one location. Users cannot, however, delete all emails with a single click using the app. This article will lead you through the steps to remove all emails from your iPhone or iPad’s Mail app at once.

How to delete all emails at once on iPhone and iPad

  1. Launch the Mail app on your iPhone.
  2. Enter your Inbox → tap Edit.
  3. Tap Select All if you wish to delete all your emails.
Alternatively, you may just select the emails you wish to delete.

To delete all emails at once, launch Mail app on iPhone, enter your inbox, tap edit, tap select all
  4. Tap Delete at the bottom-right → select Delete All to confirm your choice.

Tap Delete at the bottom-right, select Delete All to confirm your choice

If you see Archive instead of Delete at the bottom right, then follow the steps mentioned below to change your default option in the inbox.

Set Delete as your default option in Inbox

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Mail → select Accounts.
  3. Now, select your mail service provider.
Here, I am going with Gmail.

Set delete as your default option in Inbox, Launch Settings App, tap Mail, select accounts, select your mail service provider
  4. Tap Account → select Advanced.
  5. Select Deleted Mailbox under Move Discarded Messages Into.

Tap Account, select Advanced, select Deleted Mailbox

That’s it! Now, you’ll see Delete instead of Archive in your Inbox, and you can trash messages conveniently.

Note: Remember to select the specific email ID from which you wish to remove emails if you have multiple Gmail accounts

Swipe to delete emails on iPhone and iPad

This method is only viable if you seek to delete one particular email at a time.

  • Swipe all the way to the left on a particular email to delete the entry.
  • However, if you want more control over that mail, swipe halfway to the left and select from options such as More, Flag, or Delete.

If you’re old school, you can simply long-press the email and select Delete Message from the context menu.

This method can get very annoying if you seek to delete multiple emails. So, I’d suggested going with the other methods mentioned above.

What’s the difference between deleting and archiving email on iPhone and iPad?

Emails that are deleted are moved to the Bin folder. An archived email is forwarded to the Archive folder in the meantime, where it can be found later on.

How to permanently delete emails on iPhone and iPad?

Go to the Bin folder and choose the emails you want to permanently delete. Then select Edit, Select All, and Delete. All emails on your iPhone will be permanently deleted by following these procedures.

Can deleted emails be recovered?

The Bin will hold deleted emails for 30 days. The emails cannot be recovered if they have been deleted from the trash or are past their expiration date.
