How to compress PDF file size on iPhone and iPad (4 Ways)

One of the best ways to save up space on your iPhone is to compress large PDF files. But with most techniques, there is a good probability that the file’s quality will suffer when it is compressed. Therefore, I’ve covered a number of techniques in this article for compressing PDF files on your iPhone and iPad without compromising quality.

How to reduce PDF size on iPhone without using a third-party app

You should be able to manually compress the PDF files on your iPhone and iPad for free. The two standard approaches are listed below.

Using Files app

  1. Launch the Files app on your iPhone.
  2. Open the PDF file.
  3. Tap and hold the PDF.
  4. Choose Quick Actions → Optimize File Size.

Voila! Your PDF with a reduced file size will start reflecting in the same location as the original.

Additionally, if you want to compress multiple files at once, you can tap the three dots on the top right → Select → Choose the PDF(s) → tap three dots on the bottom right → select Optimize File Size.

Using iOS Shortcuts app

If not already installed, add Optimize PDF File Size to the Shortcuts app on your iPhone and iPad.

  1. Launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Optimize PDF File Size.
  3. Select the PDF to be compressed.
You can select multiple PDFs at one time.
  4. Choose Open  Open.

Use PDF Compressor apps for iPhone to reduce PDF size

If the aforementioned method is too time-consuming and you don’t want to put in the effort, you can just download the software to your iPhone that will enable PDF file size reduction. Although there are many expensive applications available, I’ve compiled a list of free apps that can help you reduce the size of your PDF files.

  1. Adobe Acrobat Reader
  2. PDF it all
  3. ILovePDF
  4. Smallpdf

You can also use a free online PDF compressor without installing any software. I have listed some of my favorite websites here.

  1. FormatPDF
  2. iLovePDF
  3. PDF2GO
  4. PDF Compressor
  5. Soda PDF

Q. Why am I unable to shrink the size of my PDF?

The least compression offered by the software may be the cause of your inability to reduce the size of your PDF document.

Q. Why is my PDF file large?

One reason your PDF is oversized could be the images in the file. Secondly, you might have embedded multiple fonts in it.

Final thoughts…

With the aforementioned techniques, PDF compression is a piece of cake. I favour using the built-in default settings on my iPhone and iPad. Which approach are you therefore choosing? Please tell me in the comments section.
